What is it to be a beginner in Yoga?

I often wonder about those beginners and advanced classes you see in yoga Studios, gyms and online . Am I a beginner if I can’t do a headstand? But what about those very strong people who manage to stand on their head in their first class? And what about those ballerinas or gymnasts who can put themselves into a pretzel but have never been into a yoga class? And come from a tradition where you push yourself a lot, to the point of injuring themselves sometimes and not respecting the principle of Ahimsa, non violence? Are they beginners or advanced? And what about those who do very little physical practice for whatever reason but still do meditation and pranayama (or breathwork as it is better known and marketed these days), hours at a time during the day?

Are you a real yogi/yogini if you know all the names of the postures in Sanskrit? And can name the 8 limbs of yoga?

My point is… yoga is vast, it encompasses many concepts, many traditions (old and not so old), there is a lot of deep, profound, self-realisation stuff, but a lot of BS too, fake gurus, abusers… It is not perfect. Neither am we.

Why did you start yoga? To look good in a legging (I still don’t after 20 years of practice!), or to feel better in yourself, or to learn to destress? I don’t think there a right or a wrong answer. Does it make you feel better after your practice? Well in my opinion, that is what matters. Even if lotus or Scorpio are not on your list of postures ever attainable, you may not be a beginner. Or an advanced practitioner. So let’s keep practising, and let’s do it for us, focusing on the good it brings us? Let’s not worry if we are not flexible, or strong or really fit. Let’s just roll out our mat and experiment and practice, whatever that practice is for you as long as you feel good after. #yogapractice #yoga #modernposturalyoga #meditation #yogateacherlondon #yogateacher #beginneryoga #advancedyoga
